Election surprises in Berks County

While most of the attention is focused on the race for Berks County Commissioner, where Republicans Mark Scott and Christian Leinbach are expected to win control of the board for the GOP, several other Republicans on the ballot could be in for some disappointment when the polls close.

We already know that at least one Republican judicial candidate will lose tonight. That's because both candidates for one open seat on the Berks County Court of Common Pleas are Republicans. Ron Stanko won the Republican nomination and Tim Rowley won the Democratic nod in May, forcing a Nov. 6 showdown. The Republican Party appears equally split between the two candidates.

The race for Recorder of Deeds could be a disappointment for John Fielding, who has a track record of knocking off Republicans in the primary only to lose to a Democrat in the fall.

Fielding beat the incumbent Republican coroner in the 2006 primary, but lost the office to a Democrat last November.

This year, Fielding knocked off incumbent Recorder of Deeds Ellie Antoine in the primary, but is facing a tough challenger in Fred Sheeler, who is spending a ton of money to win the row office.

If that wasn't enough, Antoine has launched a last-minute write-in campaign to retain her job. The write-in effort is obviously targeted at Fielding and could cost him the election.

Republicans could also lose the sheriff's seat. Democrat Mike Garipoli has run a well-financed campaign against Republican Eric Weaknecht, who is attempting to succeed his boss, Barry Jozwiak, who is not running for re-election.

The race Democrats really want to win is for Berks County District Attorney.

Four-term incumbent Republican Mark C. Baldwin is facing a challenge from Democrat John T. Adams. Losing the D.A.'s office would be devastating for the Republican Party, which always counts on law-and-order issues to go its way.
