'Pirates' a hit with the under-10 crowd

I took the kids to see "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" over the weekend. They loved the movie.

There were a lot of people for the matinee showing, but it appears "Pirates" won't be setting any box office records.

The film finished in 9th place for the weekend box office totals, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, earning about $4.4 million.

That doesn't compare well with the last VeggieTale movie, "Johah," which took in $6.2 million in its opening weekend in 2002.

Unlike "Jonah," which was enthusiastically received by church groups, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" has no references to God in the movie.

It appears that going the secular route undermined the "VeggieTales" base.

"Jonah" eventually grossed $25 million and did well on DVD.

I doubt "Pirates" will reach that total, but it is wholesome family entertainment that anyone under 10 would enjoy. A lot of the adults in he theater were also entertained. Maybe word-of-mouth will help it build a bigger audience next weekend. (Read a good review of the film at ChristianityToday.com)

I wonder why the film was released in January. It's not like the kids are home from school. A holiday release made more sense.
