4-day workweek sounds good to many

The Berks County Commissioners, who oversee 2,600 employees in Berks County, are considering allowing most of the county workers to switch to a four-day workweek to save gas and other headaches associated with commuting to work.

Instead of the typical five-day, eight-hour schedule, about 1,200 county workers would switch to a four-day, 10-hour schedule.

"I believe this is a different day at $4 a gallon," Commissioner Christian Y. Leinbach told the Reading Eagle. "If people don't have to work, I don't think they're as inclined to jump in the car."

The three-member commissioners' board could vote as early as Thursday to make the switch.

As someone who often spends 10 hours at the office, I'm all for the flexible schedule. A three-day weekend or a day off in the middle of the week would be nice.

The only problem is how to staff a newspaper seven days a week when employees work just four of those days. Unlike many places of employment, newspapers don't close on weekends. Oh well, at least the Berks County plan should get some commuters off the roads for the rest of us.
