Voter Fraud By Democrats Is No Joke

Dr. Robert R. Owens on the twisted logic the far left uses to fight Voter ID laws:

You need a photo ID to:
  • Get a Driver’s license
  • Buy alcohol
  • Buy cigarettes
  • Apply for welfare
  • Apply for food stamps
  • Cash a check
  • Purchase a firearm
  • Make any large credit card purchase
  • Open a bank account
  • Rent an apartment
  • Be admitted to a hospital
  • Get a marriage license
And yet according to Attorney General Holder any jurisdiction that requires a photo ID to vote is placing an undue burden on minorities akin to a poll tax collected by a man in a white hood.

No Joke

Kastelorizo - Mediterranean Flashpoint?

Kastelorizo - Mediterranean Flashpoint?

Guest column: Obama dismantles welfare reforms

By U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts

If  you had a car with transmission problems, you’d take it into the shop and get it replaced. But would you go back into the shop and ask them to put the old transmission back in after 30,000 miles of smooth driving? Of course not, if the car is working you’re going to keep driving it.

President Obama wants to take the transmission out of welfare reform by taking us back to the early ‘90s. A program that works doesn’t need to have essential parts taken out.

In 1996 the historic welfare reform legislation passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support 328 to 101. In the Senate the margins were equally impressive, 78 to 21. President Clinton signed the compromise bill after vetoing two earlier measures. To this day, it is considered one of the great successes of his administration.

It isn’t considered a success merely because it was supported by both parties and by public opinion polls. Over time, the numbers have shown that welfare reform has successfully moved many Americans from dependency to work. At the same time, poverty is below early 1990s levels despite the recession.

Employment among single mothers increased 15 percent between 1996 and 2000 as the reforms were instituted. Even with the economy down, employment among this group is still higher than before reform. A job pays better than government assistance and earnings among single mothers are higher now than they were in 1996.

In 15 years, reform reduced welfare rolls by 57 percent. This isn’t because the poor have just been kicked off programs. It’s because they are doing better under reform. Child poverty in female-headed households is down 15 percent since President Clinton signed the legislation.

What was the basic idea behind welfare reform? That the focus of the program should be getting beneficiaries working again. Providing unlimited benefits regardless of whether a recipient is trying to get an education or a job is a recipe for continuing failure. Unearned entitlements don’t fight poverty. They perversely breed poverty.

A few weeks ago, the Department of Health and Human Services released a new regulation that would allow states to apply for waivers to the welfare program work requirements. First of all, Congress never intended for HHS to have discretion in this area. In fact, the law specifically prohibited waivers to any of the law’s work requirements.

What are these requirements? They vary based on the family situation. Typically it is 30 hours per week of either work, training, community service or other approved activities. For single parents with small children these requirements are reduced.

States are required to have half of all families on welfare meeting these basic requirements. If a state isn’t meeting the standard, the federal grant is reduced.

Unemployment may be high, but allowing states to waive work requirements isn’t going to do anyone favors. Federal assistance is meant to be a safety net. Individuals should be working toward getting off welfare.

Sadly, this attempt to subvert the express provisions in the law seems to be a pattern with the Obama administration. HHS passed out thousands of waivers to the new health care law’s requirements, many of them to unions friendly to the administration. The President used his recess appointment power to name officials even though the Senate wasn’t actually in recess. The Justice Department refused to the defend the bipartisan Defense of Marriage Act, leaving the job of protecting the law up to the House of Representatives.

Last week, I lent my support to new legislation rejecting the administration’s subversion of welfare reform. The Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act would make it even more clear that the President lacks the authority to waive work requirements.

We shouldn’t need more legislation to tell the President to follow the law. Especially considering how successful the work requirements in welfare reform have been. A Rasmussen Reports poll this week showed that 83 percent of Americans think the requirements should stand.

Americans of all political stripes agree that government assistance shouldn’t come without some expectation that individuals are working, looking for work or receiving an education. Rolling back reform won’t help those in poverty find the job they need to climb up the ladder.

Congressman Joe Pitts is a Republican who represents Pennsylvania's 16th Congressional District in portions of Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties.

Turkish Occupation of Cyprus Enters 38th Year

AHEPA Remembers 38th "Black Anniversary" of
Invasion, Occupation of Cyprus

Supreme President Calls for Removal of Turkish Troops from Cyprus

WASHINGTON - Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides issued the following statement on the 38th anniversary of the illegal invasion and subsequent occupation of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey that occurred July 20, 1974:

"Today marks a somber day as we observe the 38th anniversary of the illegal invasion and occupation of the Republic of Cyprus by the Republic of Turkey. This was, and remains to this very day, an intolerable act; one that is a gross violation of the rule of law, human rights, and democratic ideals. We pause to remember the innocent civilians who lost their lives and the thousands who went missing, including four American citizens whose investigations remain incomplete. The illegal invasion and occupation caused the displacement of 170,000 Greek Cypriot refugees who to this day are unable to return to their homes which is also a violation of human rights as determined by the European Commission on Human Rights.

"The direct talks between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Dervis Eroglu, under the scope of the high-level UN Agreement of July 8, 2006, have provided minimal tangible progress toward a settlement to reunify Cyprus and are essentially at a stalemate. This is due to the latter's hardline positions that presented proposals outside UN parameters and European Union principles. Today, as the Republic of Cyprus assumes the EU presidency, Mr. Eroglu displays a continued intransigence stating the EU presidency will 'undermine negotiations.' This is an unfortunate position.

"However, the key to a successful settlement also rests in Ankara. We call on the U.S. government to convey a strong message to Turkey that it must provide the Turkish Cypriot community with the necessary freedom to negotiate a solution within the July 8 framework, and equally as important, it must facilitate the removal of 43,000 of its troops from the island.

"Therefore, we restate our call for a reunified Cyprus with a single sovereignty, single international personality and single citizenship; and with its independence and territorial integrity safeguarded as described in the relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions. We contend that such a solution is in the best interest of all Cypriots, and must emanate from Cypriots themselves without arbitrary timetables.

"Furthermore, on this 'black anniversary' we call on Turkey to begin the removal of its 43,000 troops from Cyprus. These are troops that as American citizens we contend would serve a better purpose, especially to NATO, in another theatre such as Afghanistan as opposed to Cyprus where there have been more than 17 million incident-free crossings by Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

"We call for these actions in the best interests of the United States. A just and viable solution to the division of Cyprus will strengthen the eastern Mediterranean and bring peace and security to the region. This is especially important as the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves within the exclusive economic zones of the Republic of Cyprus and Israel by a U.S. energy firm has yielded further bellicose threats and actions from Turkey. Furthermore, a just and viable solution will aid Turkey's candidacy to become a member of the European Union, which is also in the best interest of the United States.

"Our hope is that we will no longer need to observe this 'black anniversary,' but instead, celebrate the anniversary of a settlement. AHEPA remains committed to doing all within its power to keep the Cyprus issue in the public eye until a just and viable solution is realized."

Obama Calls for $12.7 Trillion in New Welfare Spending

The Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector on Barack Obama's latest boondogle, dismantling the welfare reform compromised former President Clinton reached with Republicans:
Obama has increased federal means-tested welfare spending by a third since taking office. Last year, combined federal and state spending on means-tested welfare hit $927 billion. (Social Security and Medicare are not included in this total.)

Welfare spending amounts to $9,040 per year for each lower-income American. If converted to cash and simply given to the recipients, this spending would be more than sufficient to bring the income of every lower-income American household to 200 percent of the federal poverty level (roughly $44,000 per year for a family of four).

Remarkably, Obama plans to increase spending on means-tested welfare spending further after the current recession ends, spreading the wealth through a dramatic, permanent expansion of the welfare state. The President’s own budget calls for a permanent increase in annual means-tested spending from 4.5 percent to 6 percent of gross domestic product. Combined annual federal and state spending would reach $1.56 trillion in 2022. Overall, President Obama plans to spend $12.7 trillion on means-tested welfare over the next decade.

The Mercury's Community Media Lab opens on Friday

Pottstown, Pa., will be host of what could be a big part of the future of journalism: a Community Media Lab.

The Mercury will hold a grand opening Friday for the Community Media Lab, a first for Pennsylvania and one of the first-of-its-kind facilities in the entire nation.

The Community Media Lab is a state-of-the-art open newsroom project of Digital First Media, a pioneering communications company.

The public is invited to attend the grand opening between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at The Mercury, which is located at the intersection of Hanover and King streets in Pottstown.

From a Mercury article announcing the event:
The new lab is one of 10 "open door" community projects announced earlier this year by Digital First Media, which manages Journal Register Co., The Mercury’s parent company.

It will offer public access to newspaper archives, free Wi-Fi and use of computers in a coffeehouse atmosphere.

In the future, wall space in the lab will be available for student art displays, community group forums, political debates and workshops on blogging, writing resumés, job searches and producing videos, said Mercury editor Nancy March.

"The Community Media Lab is an extension of an initiative we started two years ago with our Town Square blogging network, and with this joint opening, it now involves downtown business," she said.

Gov. Corbett turning into Gov. Christie

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett channeled his inner-Chris Christie during a recent press conference about the Penn State scandal when reporters kept asking the same question over and over about the length of time it took the attorney general's office to investigate Jerry Sandusky.

Corbett was attorney general for eight years until he took office as governor in January 2011.

Corbett addressed the question of why the investigation took years before a grand jury indictment early on during the press conference, but it was asked again by a reporter.

A visibly upset Corbett snapped back at the unidentified reporter:
"Why are you all obsessed with that? We do not hold up investigations for anything. You are disparaging the reputation of the men and women in that office who have worked very hard to get to the result - that justice was served and a monster was taken off the street." After a pause, a still perturbed Corbett added: "To continue to ask that question, quite honestly, is in my mind out of line. These men and women did their job. And I did my job. The men and women on that jury did their job. And that's the story. Next question."
The press conference was carried live on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has had several well-publicized confrontations with reporters, including one case where Christie called the reporter an "idiot" for asking the same question that was already answered.

Below is The Philadelphia Inquirer's account of the Corbett exchange:
